More Wildlife Photography

As i indicated in my March 8, 2012 post, I don't do any wildlife photography, but I keep running into interesting videos on the subject.  Here's another one you really need to see.

Counting Down to the Olympics

This blog is my "training blog" for the blog I plan to do while I'm in London this summer for the Olympic Games.  My interest in doing the Olympic blog is to share my sports photography from the Games (although I'm guessing with London as the background, I'm going to have just as many non-sports shots as I do sports shots).  I recently came across an excellent article on sports photography on the Getty Images blog and I wanted to share it with anyone else who might have an interest in sports photography.

Getty Images is a photo stock agency.  A photo stock agency provides photos to newspapers, magazines, advetising agencies, etc. that don't want to hire their own photographers.  Generally speaking, photo stock agencies use their own photographers or hire freelance photographers.

The video above features Getty's award-winning images from 2011.  Not all of the photos are sports shots.

One of my favorite photo stock agency websites to visit is that of Sportsfile, an Irish sports photo stock agency.  They do very interesting photo essays like this one of the Cheltenham (Horse) Racing Festival 2010.  It's really worth checking out.

Wildlife Photography

I've never done any wildlife photography, but if I was going to, this is how I'd want to do it.  Here's an article about the project as well as a link to the photographers' website.

Night Time Time Lapse

With the night sky as the feature, this time lapse is entitled "Temporal Distortion."  It's one of the better time lapses I've seen in a while.

A behind the scenes of "Temporal Distortion".  It's almost a time lapse of the time lapse (and it's only 21 seconds long).

Thanks, Lorrie!

Butler Basketball Game Day (02-28-12)

I've been able to borrow a computer, so I can access the photos I've been able to load on that computer.  This is a photo that was shot with a remote camera I had set up at the Butler/Valparaiso game last Friday.

Here's the link from the Butler athletics website to story about tonight's game.  The picture at the top of page is Sam's.  The photo further down is mine.

The Oscars, NYC and Woody Allen

Even when he has movies nominated, Woody Allen doesn't usually go to the Oscars.  But ten years ago, at the Oscar show immediately following 9/11, he did attend the Oscars to present a special film tribute about New York City in the movies.

For some reason, I'm no longer allowed to post the video above.  Here's a link where you can find it and watch it.

London Markets - Part 3

As a follow-up to my 01-02-12 post on Borough Market, here's a link to an interesting post with photos from Borough Market.

Computer Crash

I had to fly to San Diego yesterday for a business meeting. While I was at O'Hare waiting for my flight, I dropped my computer and it crashed (literally). I was meeting Emily for dinner last night (she was kind enough to drive down from LA) and I was able to get a hold of her before I took off and she was able to schedule an appointment for me at the Apple store. Turns out the screen was shot. I could get it repaired, but it probably makes more sense to get a new computer.

Long story short, I won't have a computer for a few days. For better or worse, that means there won't be any posts with pictures for a few days.

NYC - The Nation's Capital

You may not know (or remember) this, but New York (along with Philadelphia and a couple of other cities) was once the capital of the United States.  What distinguishes New York from the other "capitals" is that the nation's first president, George Washington, was inaugurated there.  It's also where the first U.S Congress met.

Washington's inauguration took place on April 30, 1789 at the Federal Hall on Wall Street.  The original Federal Hall building was demolished in 1812.  In it's place stands the Federal Hall National Memorial.  In front of the memorial is a statue commemorating Washington's inauguration.

The New York Stock Exchange is just across the street from the Federal Hall National Memorial.

Kind of like "the early bird that catches the worm", you have to get up very early to get shots of attractions in NYC if you want photos that aren't crowded with tourists.  These two pictures were shot just after sunrise.

Butler Basketball Game Day (02-18-12) - Part 2

Besides the basketball game, Saturday saw the introduction of Butler's "mascot in training", Blue III (also know as "Trip").  To celebrate the newest mascot, Butler fans saw the return of retired mascot Blue I (above).

Also in attendance was the current mascot, Blue II (above).  (I made squealing noises to get his attention and make him cock his head.)  I featured Blue II in my 01-06-12 post and this is the link to his page on the Butler University website.

And this is Blue III.  He's just a little guy, born in December.  Just like Blue II, he also has his own page on the Butler website.  Everything you want to know about Trip can be found there.

It was quite a scene in the media room before the introduction of the newest mascot.  I can't say that I've ever seen this much commotion for a player or a coach at Hinkle.  Even the university president, James Danko, got in on the action shooting pics of the new mascot with his cell phone.

Trip with breeder Frank King.

All three mascots (four including the one in costume) being introduced to the Butler faithful at Hinkle fieldhouse.  Here's another picture from this scene (but not taken by me) you should check out.

Butler Basketball Game Day (02-18-12) - Part 1

Butler's bracketbuster game against Indiana State today was a sellout.  As i indicated in my 12-31-11 post, day games that are sellouts present the best time to shoot the inside of Hinkle Fieldhouse.  Per my post, Emily shot the interior shots for me during a sellout last year.  With Emily living in California now, Sam had to step in for her.  The picture immediately above is hers. I think she did a pretty good job!

Butler 's Braketbuster Game

Butler plays Indiana State in tomorrow's bracketbuster game.  The game will be at Butler.

I took the photo above at Tuesday night's game (02-14-12) against Loyola (which Butler won). Butler used the photo in it's story about Saturday's game.

One Week Until Fat Tuesday

A continuation of my post from 01-31-12.  Random photos from around the Blaine Kern Studios.  I think the bald guy in the bottom photo is/was the mayor of New Orleans.

Cupcakes

The popularity of cupcakes seemed to take off after Magnolia Bakery was featured in an episode of Sex and the City (see below).  My favorite cupcakes in NYC come from Baked by Melissa. The cupcakes from Baked by Melissa are mini cupcakes.  They're almost bite-sized; giving you the opportunity to try more than one (or two or three).

Bill and Me

Sticking with the Cleveland theme for one more day, this picture was taken a few years back when I was in Cleveland on business.

Butler Basketball Game Day (02-11-12)

With photography, timing is everything.  Thought this was kind of a funny photo.  Shot it at today's game.  Butler pulled off a bit of an upset today beating Cleveland State by a score of 52-49. Here's a link to the story on the Butler website that includes a couple of my photos.

Speaking of timing, here's a photo I took that I could probably never duplicate in 1,000 tries.

Cleveland Bound

I'm sitting at the airport (O'Hare) trying to get to Cleveland for Butler's game tomorrow.  Weather is holding things up.  Don't really care how late I get there, I just want to be able to get there tonight. The game is at noon tomorrow and I'm not sure if I can get a flight out in the morning.

Since I've got some time on my hands, I thought I would post some pictures I took when I was in Cleveland a few years ago.  The photo at the bottom is of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Butler Basketball Game Day (02-09-12)

It's been a tough season for Butler's basketball coach, Brad Stevens.  Coach Stevens is in his fifth season as head coach of the Bulldogs.  In his first four years as coach, his teams averaged 29 wins and 6 losses per season.  The team's record as of today is 14-12.  The good news is that the Bulldogs defeated Youngstown State today by a score of 68-59.

Two Weeks Until Fat Tuesday

Artists doing detail work on the floats.  Since these photos were taken after last year's Mardi Gras, the work being done in these photos was for the floats in this year's parade.
